I am seeking information on the possibilities of implementing a new
circulation system where the target for change is to move the existing
system of charging out books from the staff to the user. I am interested
in gaining ideas, bibliographies, etc., from any libraries that have such
a system or have one in the works.
Topics of interest are: interface design, electronic or laser reading
devices of barcodes, security features, hardware (dimensions, etc.),
software - home-grown or a shell program, vendors, ball park monetary
figures, and the pros & cons that come with such a system.
The features I would like to recommend include: a laser reading device to
scan barcodes attached to the library card and item, a user friendly
interface with a voice synthesis function instructing the customer step
by step, and an automatic demagnetizing function built into the charge-out
process when scanning the item.
