I don't know if this has been mentioned on PACS-L before, but in case it
hasn't:

In a magazine published by DEC (EDU Magazine) there was a sidebar about a
program written by Mark Resmer at Sonoma State Univ which uses Dec Command
Language to access a database of resources available over the internet, and
then will establish the telnet link. It also gives s short list of
required responses to the system prompts once connected. IT has some
limitations depending on which TCP/IP is being used. I have seen mention
of similar programs for unix machines, but this is the first one I have
come across for DEC VMS setups. I have tried it, and even though I
don't have the best TCP/IP to use it with, it works all right. Most of all,
it demonstrates how one can develop such a feature without having to
invest in a lot of time and resources (I am sure it took quite some time
to do this, but it doesn't use special programming software, etc - only
command language).

If anyone wnats to try this, you can get it by FTP from sonoma.edu in the
PUB subdirectory. Note that this is a text file, so you do NOT need to
set type to binary before you download. Once you have it in you local file
area (the file name is LIBS.COM -- guess you need to know that, too),
you run it by entering @LIBS (just in case you are as much a VMS amateur
as I am). Final note: if you use this, and want to get "updates" you need
to send a message to Mark Resmer and he will put you on a mailinglist for
notification of changes. He is at resmer@sonoma.edu.
(N.B. excuse typos and such in the above...)
