would demand a very long response, that I do not feel like writing up.
However I cannot remain silent on the question of MINITEL. As somebody once
remarked to me, it is the poor man's PC. Thanks to an aggressive marketing
of this product (and the services that go with it, far from 'free'), France
is now in the position where (as a librarian from UCLA has written to me)
you can have e-mail to libraries in Turkey or Egypt, but not to France. As a
matter of fact, here in Strasbourg (which of course is unimportant, since it
is not Paris) the Unite de Formation a l'Information Scientifique et
Technique has no e-mail...
As Pompidou once said "En France nous n'avons pas de petrole mais nous avons
des idees"; I would substitute "e-mail" for "petrole" to summarize the
situation and would also add "... et il n'y a pas de quoi etre fier".
