Subject: LCC in machine-readable form
The Library of Congress is exploring the feasibility and requirements of
converting the Library of Congress Classification into machine-readable
form. If classification data were available in the new USMARC
Classification Format, how would this data likely be used? Following are
some possible uses:
- maintaining classification schedules online so they may be
more easily updated
- producing a printed product from an online file
- linking classification records with bibliographic records,
perhaps for reclassification projects or for validation of classification
numbers assigned to bibliographic records
- linking classification records with subject and name authority
records
- developing systems for machine-assisted classification
- providing enhanced subject access to collections through
classification numbers
