Job Description
POSITION: Head, Catalog Management
DEPARTMENT: Catalog
DIVISION: Technical Services
REPORTS TO: Head, Catalog Department
SUMMARY: The Catalog Management Section supports bibliographic
control and database building activities of Northwestern
University Library and its NOTIS participants. Functions
include: Management of the online catalog and authority file;
input and modification of bibliographic and authorities data;
management of circulation item record data; retrospective
conversion; update of holdings data to reflect material transfer,
withdrawal and addition. The Section consists of 1.5 librarians,
6 support staff, and hourly staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Supervises staff; makes hiring recommendations; prepares
evaluations; recommends for promotion, reclassification of
positions, or other personnel action; trains or oversees training
of staff.
2) Oversees or performs the activities of the Section, including:
--Maintenance of catalog quality through identification and
resolution of errors and conflicts.
--Conversion of manual cataloging records to machine readable
form.
--Input of bibliographic and authorities data.
--Item record creation and other circulation support
activities.
--Creation or modification of bibliographic records to reflect
material addition, withdrawal, or transfer.
--Coordination of the NOTIS union online authority file,
including liaison with NOTIS participants such as other
processing units.
--Distribution of catalog cards, shelflist maintenance;
limited maintenance of closed card catalogs.
--Resolution of catalog related problems referred by Library
staff or users.
3) Devises and documents procedures, shifts assignments, etc.,
within the Section for most efficient use of staff.
4)Works with the Department Head and other Section Heads in
directing activities and formulating procedures affecting more
than one section.
5) Proposes and/or carries out or supervises special projects
related to the work of the Section (e.g. special retrospective
conversion or withdrawal projects).
6) Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's Degree from an ALA accredited library school
program. A working knowledge of two or more modern foreign
languages, preferably including German and a Romance language.
Experience: Minimum three years professional experience in
cataloging and/or catalog management, including significant
experience in original cataloging and authority control performed
in an automated environment. Demonstrated organizational and
supervisory capabilities.
Salary Range: $28,000 to $32,000. Send application and resume,

NETWORK LIAISON OFFICER
The SUNY/OCLC Network is seeking a Network Liaison Officer to work with
librarians throughout New York State providing support for OCLC and
other Network products and services. The position is responsible for
coordination of the promotional activities of the Network and member-
ship inquiries; coordinating conference exhibits and the design and
production of promotional materials; editing and contributing to
regular shared liaison services.
QUALIFICATIONS: MLS, minimum three years professional experience,
editing and/or publication experience, strong oral and written
communication skills, and ability to work well with others and
independently. Knowledge of desk-top publishing and experience
with OCLC system and library network preferred.
