I'm a graduate student working with the Africana librarian at the University
of Illinois on a general resource guide for African Studies. What I'd really
like to find out is if anyone has any experience with African Studies-related
databases available over the Internet. These could be general databases on
such issues as "development" that have a significant amount of material related
to Africa or more specific databases on the continent or individual countries.
I'm interested in statistical/humanities/social science sources...basically,
anything at all. For example, I know that Northwestern University's OPAC
includes the complete (retrospectively converted) holdings of their Africana
collection. I've heard a _rumor_ that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
has an internet-accessible database. I haven't been able to track that down.
I'm also primarily interested in non-fee-based sources (I do have some leads on
relevant fee-based sources).
Since I suspect other researchers might want to know about some of this, it
might be best to reply to this group, but replies via e-mail (pardue@alexia.
lis.uiuc) will be most welcome, as well.
