Cindy Harper asks what is a WAIS.

You might find your answer in the PACS-L database
maintained of LISTSERV@UHUPVM1.BITNET.  Several
good explanations of what is a WAIS are there. I
frequently forget and have to get the explanation
every few months.

To search the data base send the following email
message to LISTSERV@UHUPVM1.BITNET.  No subject
heading is needed.
(I use a file called searchdd that I mail.)

//
Database Search DD=Rules
//Rules DD *
Search WAIS in PACS-L
Index
/*

I made an executalble file called sdd that mails
the above. For a new search, I need only change the
search word in searchdd.

mail LISTSERV@UHUPVM1.BITNET <searchdd

Your response from LISTSERV@UHUPVM1.BITNET might
look like this:

003881 91/07/14 11:59   38   Internet Library WAIS
Database
003893 91/07/14 12:30   27   Re: Future Libraries

interface on OPAC.. 004079 91/08/07 17:36   58
Gateway Software for UNIX System

Then you mail LISTSERV@UHUPVM1.BITNET the following
to print:

//
Database Search DD=Rules
//rules DD *
Search WAIS in PACS-L
Print all of 3913 3915 3928 3979 3980 5745
/*

The database works the best on proper names, unique
software names--WAIS-- and other specific topics

Hope this is of help.
