OCLC Internet Resources Cataloging Experiment
Project Update--Phase I, Record Creation
The OCLC Office of Research announces completion of Phase I of the
Internet Resources Cataloging Experiment.
This Cataloging Experiment investigates the practical and theoretical
cataloging problems posed by electronic information objects available via the
Internet, and tests the suitability of the USMARC Computer Files Format and the
Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, rev. ed., chapter 9, Computer Files, for
creating catalog records.
During Phase I, participants created cataloging records for 300 electronic
information objects obtained from sources accessible via the Internet. Items
included in the experimental set represent a wide range of electronic
information objects including text, software, and data.
Each of 30 primary participants or teams cataloged 30 items, and each item was
cataloged by three different participants, resulting in the creation of 900
records. For each record, participants also created an associated log file to
record problems, comments, and suggestions related to object itself, the USMARC
format, or the cataloging rules.
During Phase II, now under way, the catalog records will be analyzed using
automated and manual means.
The findings of this project will serve as the basis for the development of
guidelines to assist libraries and librarians who wish to extend their
cataloging activities to include materials available via the Internet.
OCLC will publish a final project report.
