CALL FOR PAPERS
ACM SIGIR
16th International Conference
on
Research and Development
in
Information Retrieval
June 27-30, 1993
Pittsburgh, PA
***********************************************
The ACM Special Interest Group in Information Retrieval invites
submissions for SIGIR 93, the 16th Annual International Conference on
Research and Development in Information Retrieval, to be held in
Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
The ACM SIGIR Conference is a forum for the investigation and exchange of
ideas related to information retrieval (IR), including text representation
and indexing, natural language processing, retrieval system modelling and
evaluation, user interfaces, knowledge-based systems, and hypertext and
multimedia issues. These topics are addressed at the theoretical,
methodological and applications level, and draw on research in many
fields, including human cognition, artificial intelligence and knowledge
processing. The current rapid growth in available full text and
multimedia information makes the design and evaluation of improved IR
systems a matter of critical interest to the information industry as well
as the research community.
The Conference will begin with tutorials on June 27, 1993 with contributed
research papers and panel sessions June 28-30.
Full papers and panel proposals should be submitted to program chairs by
January 8, 1993, and tutorial proposals to tutorial chairs by February 1,
1993.
To receive further information, instructions for contributors, or to be
added to the mailing list, send email to sigir@lis.pitt.edu or contact the
conference chair or appropriate program or tutorial chair.

IMPORTANT DATES
8 January 1993: Full papers and panel proposals due to program
chairs.
1 February 1993: Tutorial proposals due to program chairs.
1 March 1993: Authors informed of acceptance of papers and proposals.
5 April 1993: Final versions of papers in camera ready copy due
to program chairs.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS
Full details on paper, panel, and tutorial submissions may be obtained by
sending e-mail to sigir@lis.pitt.edu or contacting the appropriate program
or tutorial chair.
CONTRIBUTED PAPERS
Contributors should send four copies of each original research paper to
the appropriate program chair. Full-length papers should not exceed
twenty pages, double spaced. No extended abstracts will be accepted. A
few "short papers" on research in progress may be accepted for a separate
session. Short papers not exceeding eight pages should be sent to the
appropriate program chair, in four copies.
Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings;
authors will be required to sign an ACM copyright release form.
ACM format is required for publication and is preferred for initial
submissions. Contact sigir@lis.pitt.edu for details.
Submission deadline: January 8, 1993.
PANEL PRESENTATIONS
A limited number of panel sessions will be included in the program. Panel
suggestions, including a description of the panel topic, names of proposed
speakers and moderator, and brief abstracts of the proposed presentations,
should be sent to the appropriate program chair. Each proposal should be
no more than three pages in length, and should be submitted in four
copies.
Submission deadline: January 8, 1993.
TUTORIALS
Tutorial proposals should consist of the topic to be discussed, the
name(s) and brief biographies of the presenter(s), and an outline of the
tutorial. The proposal should indicate whether the tutorial is planned
for a full day or a half day. Four copies of each proposal, of no more
than three pages, should be submitted to the tutorial chair.
Submission deadline: February 1, 1993.
