Michael Schrage, visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) Sloan School's Center for Coordination Science and MIT's
Laboratory for Computer Science, will speak on Monday, September 14, 2 to
4 pm, during the 3rd National Conference of the Library and Information
Technology Association (LITA), in Denver, Colorado.
The title of his presentation is "The Myth of the Information Age or Why
Information Technology Isn't."
Schrage writes and consults on issues defining how technology reshapes the
way people interact. He is the author of "Shared Minds: The New
Technologies of Collaboration," Random House, 1990 - the first book to
explore the dynamics and the tools that successful collaborations in
business, science, and the arts require. The book reached the San
Francisco Examiner/Chronicle Sunday Book Review best seller list. The
Japanese edition is published as "Mind Networks," President, 1992, and is
already in its second printing.
His ongoing work focuses on the design of prototypes, collaborative tools,
and environments to support innovation. Schrage's approach is to view
technology as a medium to better structure relationships, not just
information. He is particularly concerned about the technology transfer
process in organizations.
Schrage has spoken to, or consulted for, a number of companies including
Allstate, Hughes Research Lab, the National Governor's Association, and
the Faxon Institute.
During the 1988-89 academic year, Schrage was a visiting scholar at MIT's
Media Lab exploring industry/university technology transfer policies and
programs. Previously, he was senior editor at Manhattan, Inc. magazine
and the technology correspondent for the Washington Post.
Schrage has been a contributor to several publications including the
Harvard Business Review, Fortune, the Sunday New York Times, and American
Film. He writes the weekly "Innovation" column for the Los Angeles Times,
which is nationally syndicated, as well as AdWeek's biweekly "Out There"
column on the future of commercial media.
An exhibits reception will follow Schrage's presentations.
Conference preliminary programs will be sent to LITA members in mid-April.
Copies will also be available by contacting the LITA Office,
