Budgets are tight. Belts are being tightened; belts are being sold; belts
are going around the necks of librarians! After the most recent election
California, one library has been left hanging in the breeze.
In a recent referendum, Mendocino County Library (CA) garnered 54% of
the vote, but two-thirds was required for passage. Without it, the whole
system will close down in about three months. Staff members are leaving to
find work elsewhere. Innovative projects have been suspended.
At the upcoming ALA conference some of us will be wearing a black band at
the base of our name tags in memory of this library's tragic end.
It is said that policemen wear black tape on their badges when another is
killed in action. This was an active library, but it was killed by the vote,
and by the economy. If you know of other libraries that may be snuffed
out for any reason, please let us know.
