I have several of the same questions that Judith Axler Turner asked the
other day. What is advertising?; when is it acceptable?; how does one go
about it properly on the net?
We produce the PILOTS database, which indexes the world's literature on
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related forms of traumatic
stress. It's available for searching on BRS (as a subfile of CHID, the
Combined Health Information Database), and it may also be downloaded
(as a database in Pro-Cite format) via anonymous ftp from an Internet
host. The National Center for PTSD is part of the U.S. Dept. of Veterans
Affairs, so there's no issue about PILOTS being a commercial venture.
Using the Kovacs list, I've identified about 40 lists that are devoted to
topics related to traumatic stress. It's an interdisciplinary field (which is
why PILOTS exists: neither MEDLINE nor PsycINFO nor any other
database covers the field in its entirety), and the database should be of
use to researchers, clinicians, and policy makers in many areas. So I
would like to make its existence known to the subscribers of all these
lists.
My question is this: is it proper for me to do so? If it is, how should I
go about it? If it isn't, what alternative method should I use to let
potential PILOTS users know that this new database exists?
