Subject: Moderated & Not moderated lists
First, I hope no one extends this discussion into the realm
of "censorship". IF a moderated list is censored, then probably
everything ever published in print can be considered censored
also.
I subscribed to two listservers, this one, and another unmoderated
(or should I say under-moderated) one. I dropped the second fairly
quickly because I do not find the DELETE key as easy to press as
Michael Hart.
My time is too precious to wade thru certain messages, so I prefer
a moderated list, and I really think PACS-L does a great job.
In fact, I wish all the listservs could be folded into one and
I could get my local librarian to SDI just the stuff I'm interested
in. So, I'm all in favor of improving selectivity.
I think we also need to have absolutely un-moderated lists; I would
support any effort to ensure "free" lists as a matter of principle,
even if I would not use them myself (and I might participate if my
professional circumstances were different). I do not question the
need or justification for "free" lists. With flames and inane messages
and everything else!
To me its not a question of either/or, but a matter of you go your
way and I'll go mine. In the electronic information
world, we should be able to accomodate both those that want to see
everything (and keep one finger on the DELETE key), and those that
do not. Why not have a GOVDOC-M(oderated) and a GOVDOC-F(ree)?
