Perhaps I can kill two birds with one stone regarding Internet
addresses and Internet Guides. SURAnet, a mid-regional network, has for
the past year, been making available to Internet users a Guide to Selected
Sources on the Internet. When this Guide was started it was only 5 pages
long. Now after much time and effort the Guide has grown to over 45 pages
in length. Although there are several guides available on the Internet, to
the best of my knowledge, the SURAnet Guide is the only one which is updated
weekly. The sources for the resources listed in the Guide are also updated
monthly. The contents of the SURAnet Guide follows:

                                CONTENTS

This Guide contains pointers to sources of information available on the
Internet The Guide consists of an Introduction and six other Sections,
each of which provides references to documents and other sources that
deal with that topic. The source documents themselves are not provided.

        Sections:

0. Introduction

A. Using the Internet
Documents that help users become familiar
        with the Network

B. Information Resources
                Directory Services
                Campus Wide Information Servers
                Library Catalogs
                Databases
                        General Topics
                        Geography
                        Humanities
                                General Humanities
                                History
                                Literature & Language
                                Philosophy
                        Education
                        Social Sciences
                        Sciences & Technology
                                Biological Sciences
                                Physical Sciences
                News Groups/Interest Groups
                Electronic Journals and Newsletters
                Bulletin Boards
                Software

C. Networking Topics
        Documents that deal with network
        administration, protocols, etc.

D. Supercomputer Centers

E. Miscellaneous Information Sources

F. Using Anonymous ftp

Due to the large number of people posting to various discussion
groups asking, "What is the address of such and such school or institution"
or "How do I find Phil Lesh's address at U. of Maryland", SURAnet has
devoted a section of its Guide to Directory Services. Included in this
section are services such as, PARADISE, KNOWBOT, WHOIS, Merit's NetMail
Hosts database, and NetFind.
All of this information is available via anonymous ftp at
ftp.sura.net located in the pub/nic directory. I also posting the README
file from the nic directory so that you can have an idea of what it
contains. The README.FIRST file follows:

Welcome to the SURAnet Network Information Center,

In this directory you will find many materials useful to the
new user of the Internet. Sub-directories have been created which
contain information on directory services and "How to Guides" for
network navigation. These sub-directories are entitled,
"directory.services" and "network.service.guides."
The structure of "nic" directory and sub-directories follows:
