I disagree with the idea that librarians can provide both technical
and intellectual access to computerized resources. While that may be an
ideal, the technical issues are too complex and possiblities are too
varied to expect anyone to have a full grip on them. Some of us might
be able to talk users through things like FTP, Internet OPAC access,
tape loading on the mainframe, that's only scratching the surface of the
various operations of the computer center. While the temptation may be
great to say that access to information is our job, there is a reason
to have computer people over there.
