                      Manager, Information Arcade
                      University of Iowa Libraries
                            Iowa City, Iowa

The Information Arcade is being developed at the University of Iowa as
part of the University Libraries.  The primary mission of the
Information Arcade is to provide a facility and service to allow members
of the university community to obtain access to a range of information
resources in a variety of electronic formats and to learn to integrate
these with traditional information sources.  The facility will have a
classroom equipped with 24 workstations and an additional 58
workstations including multi-media in other areas of the Arcade for
individual and group activities.
The Arcade will be fully networked to the Internet and local information
resources.  It will contain the primary collection of instructional and
developmental software on campus and will have access to data bases on
the mainframe, file searches, and CD-ROMs.

Position Description:  Primary responsibilities will be to plan, manage
and evaluate the activity of the Information Arcade.  The Manager will
work with the Director, Information Systems and Technology to hire,
train and supervise Arcade staff; develop and monitor the budget of the
Arcade with appropriate library administrators; formalize policies and
procedures for the Arcade; analyze use of the Arcade and provide
periodic reports.  The Manger will work with the Director of Collection
Development to select and purchase appropriate electronic information
resources for the Arcade.  The Manager will work with the Director,
Information Systems and Technology to design an evaluation process to
assess how the Arcade is being used and its impact on teaching, research
and learning.

Qualifications:

Required:  A graduate degree from an ALA accredited library and
information science program, instructional technology program or the
equivalent; general knowledge of information and instructional
technology; demonstrated administrative and leadership abilities;
ability to work with academic faculty; excellent oral and written
communication skills; and demonstrated commitment to professional
involvement.  Some travel may be required to describe the Arcade Project
at professional meetings.

Preferred:  Knowledge of and experience using a wide variety of
information resources; prior experience in a computer laboratory or
electronic classroom environment; working knowledge of multimedia
authoring tools; networking hardware and software; use of the Internet.
Salary and Appointment:  Appointment rank and salary will be based on
relevant experience and educational background.  Appointment will be
made at the Librarian II or III level or an equivalent professional and
scientific staff level.  Salary range:  $32,000 - $42,000 depending upon
qualifications and experience.  The University offers an attractive

The UI Libraries:  The UI library system consists of the Main Library
and 11 departmental libraries (Art, Music, Business, and the sciences,
including the health sciences).  With some 3 million volumes, the
collections of the UI Libraries rank 29 out of 107 in the Association of
Research Libraries.  The Libraries' NOTIS-based automated system is
called OASIS.  The University is a member of the Research Libraries
Group and is in the process of implementing OCLC.  Staff are actively
engaged in national cooperative efforts.  The Libraries provide a
program of support for professional development activities.

Environment -- The University and Iowa City:  A major research and
teaching institution, the University of Iowa offers recognized programs
in a wide variety of areas.  The University consists of a faculty of
some 1,600 serving over 28,000 students, 9,000 of whom are registered in
graduate degree programs.  Iowa City is a community with excellent
educational, recreational, and cultural advantages, and is readily
accessible via interstate highways and a major airport only 30 minutes
away.
