I'd like to thank everyone who responded,
to me and to the lists, to my suggestion of
several weeks ago about putting up a library-catalog
style database on the net which would enhance
access to internet resources. Also, I apologize
for not responding individually to all of you
who sent me e-mail. There were too many. Those
of you who volunteered to catalog, read on!, your
help is needed and appreciated.
In particular, I'd like to thank Brian Nielson,
who pointed me to the project at Indiana University.
I spoke to Peter Percival at Indiana, and he confirmed
that while their project began as a directory of
directories, they are working on 'cataloging rules',
if you will, that will apply to individual resources as well,
and they are talking about an interactively searchable
(BRS based) FREE catalog available on the internet.
He told me that they plan to publish their
proposed 'data elements definition' within a week or
two, and proceed soon thereafter to input records.
So, rather than duplicate their effort, I plan to join
their bandwagon! Mr. Percival said he'd love to get
volunteers to help catalog resources, so could those
of you who volunteered do so again to him? His
e-mail address is percival@indiana.edu.
Finally, many thanks to CARL systems for
volunteering to supply machine, software, and
coordination of the project. A generous deed.
I'm going to resist the temptation to answer
all the various counter-suggestions that were posted
to the list, and simply leave it at: I thought it
a fun discussion to read, and appreciate all the
postings.
