As a member of a continuing education planning committee for a regional
multi-type libraries organization, I stuck my neck out by lobbying for a
workshop on libraries and the Internet, and then stuck my foot in it by
agreeing to look into recruiting speakers/instructors.
Most of the membership of the organization, or at least attenders of its
meetings, are public librarians from area communities. All public libraries in
our county are linked by a GEAC catalog/circulation system (which is not
generally made accessible to the public.) ALL libraries in the region are
linked by a single delivery system; however, the GEAC system reportedly has no
outside network connections, and there is no communications or interlibrary
loan connection between the academic and libraries, except for the old "mail
your request in triplicate to the state librarian and wait three weeks" method.
So I'm looking for some presenter who could discuss possible ways for public
as well as academic libraries to connect to and benefit from (and share their
benefits with) that great big electronic world out there. Looking at all the
programs and sessions offered on this list, it seems to me that there is a pool
of network "heavy-hitters" who seem to turn up at a great many workshops all
over the country. So I'm wondering, for you heavy hitters or recruiters of
heavy hitters out there, how does one go about getting someone to do an
internet workshop, what kind of costs are typical, etc.
If you are, or know of, a potential presenter in Wisconsin or the Midwest, I'd
especially like to hear from you, because our budget for travel costs is pretty
limited.
Anyone moved to repond can contact me directly; if anyone else wants the
information, I'd be happy to summarize individually or to the list.
Thanks,
