Library Director

POSITION PURPOSE: Wayne State University Library invites
applications and nominations for the Library Director for the
Collections and Scholarly Communication Department.  Reporting
to the Associate Dean, University Library Systems, the Library
Director will have responsibility for leading the Libraries’
collections and scholarly communications programs, including
current and future directions in building and managing
collections. The WSU Libraries are unique in that the Law
Library and the Medical Library are a part of the system wide
collection strategy. He/she supervises the leader of the
Acquisitions unit and coordinates the work of subject
selectors including development of a special collections team.
The Director will research and share the current trends in
electronic publishing, open access to networked and digital
information, institutional repositories and copyright policy
with faculty and staff.

Wayne State University Library System is a leader in building
electronic resources for a progressive urban university.  The
WSU faculty supports an evolving vision of library collections
and services, with the potential for new and innovative
services and resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Work collaboratively with the University
Faculty and the subject librarians, develop policy and
procedures and evaluation strategies for building and managing
collections, looking strategically at the needs of a diverse
faculty and student body; work collaboratively with the
Director of Library Assessment to assess existing collections
and their use; manage the collections budget; serve as the
primary liaison from the Library to faculty of the schools,
colleges, departments and university committees in the area of
collection development and seeks to promote and advance the
Libraries’ role in the academic community; provide leadership
in the application of new technologies related to collection
development/management including setting collection
development priorities for local digitization initiatives;
develop and implement a Special Collections strategy for the
Library system; work with the University community, develop
and implement a Scholarly Communications program; Chairs the
Libraries’ Collection Development and Management Team;
negotiate and manage the libraries electronic license
agreements; has oversight responsibility for the Acquisitions
Unit; serve as a member of the University Libraries’ senior
management team; and represent the libraries collections among
national, regional and state peers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Professional degree from an
ALA-accredited library school; evidence of at least five years
of significant and progressively responsible experience in
Collection development and management, including resource
acquisition and management experience in a University setting;
demonstrated success as a collaborative team builder;
experience in effective planning and budgeting for collections
in a complex library environment; understanding of trends in
the scholarly publishing industry; excellent analytical and
conceptual abilities; proven experience in solving problems
with a user centered approach; strong commitment to fostering
the growth and development of others experience with online
library systems; and superior oral, interpersonal and written
communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree in a relevant
discipline; experience with consortial planning for collection
development; strong record of professional activity in areas
relating to responsibilities; experience in fundraising for
collection development and cultivating donor relationships.
