Director of Public Services


POSITION PURPOSE: Wayne State University Library System is
seeking a dynamic leader with a commitment to excellence in
customer service and a record of successful leadership who
wishes to work in a fast-paced environment where planning,
assessment, innovation, staff development and service are
emphasized. Reporting to the Associate Dean the Director of
Public Services will provide leadership and functional
direction for the overall management of Public Services, which
includes circulation, instruction, interlibrary loan,
reference, research services, reserves, and stacks.  The
Director of Public Services will coordinate services and
supervise personnel in the Undergraduate Library, the
Purdy/Kresge Library, and the Science & Engineering Library.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Analyze and direct the development of
strategies and options to meet user needs; develop, manage,
and assess a comprehensive public services program; support an
environment in which delivery of quality service is the
pre-eminent shared value; prepare comprehensive, sensitive
analyses, briefings, reports and presentations; lead the
development and implementation of policies and procedures;
monitor and evaluate program, service and initiative
effectiveness in meeting departmental objectives, and
contribute to the development of strategic directions;
represent the Library System and establish networks with
colleagues and professionals in other university departments,
other libraries, and professional associations.

QUALIFICATIONS: Professional degree from an ALA-accredited
library school; significant and progressively responsible
experience managing public services programs in a large
library system; successful supervisory experience, preferably
in a library setting; with a multi-union environment;
demonstrated ability to plan, implement and assess projects;
evidence of strong interpersonal skills as well as written and
oral communication skills; ability to work independently and
collaboratively in a complex, fast-paced, service-oriented
environment; demonstrated initiative and flexibility in
adapting to change; sound knowledge of issues/trends in
academic libraries, understanding of the issues related to
public services in a technology rich environment; history of
successful implementation of public service programs based on
user feedback.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: PhD or second master’s; experience
working at a large and/or urban institution.
