HEAD, TECHNICAL SERVICES SECTION

Norris Medical Library is located on the University of Southern
California Health Sciences Campus next to the LAC+USC Healthcare
Network.  It is four miles from downtown Los Angeles and seven miles
from the University Park Campus.  The library contains 171,357 volumes
and receives 1,911 current periodicals.  Users include medical,
pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students, 1,230
full-time faculty, and a large number of other health professionals.
The library staff of 41 FTE includes 12.5 librarians.  See

Responsibilities:

                ·       Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 4 full-time
staff and 1.1 FTE student workers.
·       Electronic resource acquisition and management.  Oversee
purchase and activation of electronic resources and management of
library electronic resources database.  Provide backup for
troubleshooting access problems.
·       Perform original and non-print cataloging for both Health
Sciences Libraries using AACR2, MARC bibliographic and authority
formats, NLM Classification and MeSH; review member-contributed copy
cataloging.
                ·       Work with Associate Director, Collection
Resources to plan, implement, manage Technical Services automated
systems and hold primary responsibility for routine use of systems.
·       Manage operations planning for Technical Services Section;
measure cost and workflow effectiveness; research, plan and implement
systems and routines to increase efficiency and lower costs and
turnaround times.
                ·       Monitor fiscal and statistical reports, and
evaluate vendors to assure quality of service.
                ·       Provide reference assistance.
                ·       Participate in library planning; serve on
library, campus, and university committees and task forces.


Qualifications:

                1.      Master's degree from an ALA accredited graduate
program (MLS); 3-5 years of cataloging or other technical service
experience.  Knowledge of bibliographic utility (OCLC preferred) and
integrated library system (Horizon preferred).
                2.      Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging at an
academic library using an automated system and a bibliographic utility,
including knowledge of AACR2, MARC bibliographic and authority for all
formats, NLM Classification and MeSH.
3.      Familiarity with current library trends, standards and emerging
technologies, especially OPAC systems; demonstrated interest in the use
of technology to improve access to library services and materials.
4.      Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills and strong
service orientation; ability to work cooperatively in a team
environment; excellent organizational, written and oral communication
skills.

Salary/Status:  $42,500 - $53,000 DOE.  Continuing-appointment track
position.
