FACULTY POSITION
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University is
seeking an individual for a full-time, tenure track position to
begin August, 1993. The salary is commensurate with
qualifications. Applicants should be able to teach in one of the
basic Masters in Library Science (MLS) course areas such as
reference, management, online services, organization of
information sources, and in at least two of the following areas:
o applications of information technologies in
library/information centers
o automation of library/information centers
o information services in corporate/academic/special
information centers
o business information resources and strategic intelligence
o networks and networked information services
o scientific and technical information resources.
Applicants should have strong research skills, a record of
research productivity or a clearly articulated research agenda
within the broad area of information studies. The School sees
its research expertise in such areas as information uses and
users, information services and technologies in organizational
settings, and design and evaluation of information systems.
Preference will be given to those applicants who complement the
teaching and research needs of the School and will contribute to
the School's four educational programs: the MLS, the
Undergraduate Program, the Masters in Information Resources
Management, and the PhD in Information Transfer.
Qualifications for this position are:
o PhD completed (or anticipated) in library/information science
or related field
o Experience in and/or knowledge about various types of
library/information centers
o Proven track record of research productivity or potential for
such research productivity
o Ability to work effectively in a range of settings and with
different types of individuals
o Evidence of excellence, or potential excellence in teaching.
The School of Information Studies is a leading university center
in advancing both the theory and practice of library/information
resources/systems management. Located in the Center for Science
and Technology, the School offers a highly interdisciplinary
research and teaching environment that nurtures a talented faculty
with backgrounds in communication, information systems, computer
science, educational technology, information resources management,
and library/information science.

Qualifications:
Masters degree from an accredited school. Minimum of five years
experience in archival work.
Responsibilities:
Promotes, coordinates and administers the State of Florida Records
Management program for the North Miami Campus.
Promotes and coordinates the collection of archival materials
produced by the North Miami Campus for inclusion in the University
Archives located at the University Park Library.
Acts as resource person and liaison for all records management and
archival duties on the North Miami Campus in coordination and
cooperation with the University Archives.
Processes and indexes transcripts from the Holocaust Documentation
and Education Center Oral History project.
Rank, Salary and Benefits:

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
COORDINATOR OF ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Houston Libraries are
developing a state-of-the-art Electronic Information System that will
provide access to citation, full-text, image, numeric and other databases
via computer networks. The Coordinator of Electronic Resources
coordinates collection development for CD-ROM databases, locally
mounted databases, databases on the Internet, and other electronic
resources, including initial and ongoing evaluation of electronic
resources, license agreements, etc. Plans and implements program for
outreach and training in the use of electronic information resources for
librarians, staff, and library users. Reports to Head of Information
Services, and works closely with Coordinator of Electronic Services and
subject librarians to provide access to materials in electronic formats.
Assists in preparing grant proposals for enhancing access to electronic
resources. Serves as subject librarian for designated social science or
science disciplines including collection development, library instruction,
computer searching, and faculty liaison work, and provides reference
services including some weekend and evening hours.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires ALA-accredited Master's degree; two
years of professional library experience including knowledge of electronic
resources and the Internet; excellent written and oral communication
and presentation skills with strong service orientation; and the ability
to work successfully with faculty, students and staff as well as the
public.
SALARY & BENEFITS: Salary; $30,000. Comprehensive benefits
package; 88% of social security paid for first $16,500 of salary; choice of
retirement programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity
program available; release time to take a class up to 3 hrs/week; no
state or local income tax.
LIBRARY INFORMATION: As the research library for a four campus
system, the University of Houston Libraries holdings exceed 1.6 million
volumes. Total staff currently includes 42 professionals and 155 support
staff. The library is a member of ARL.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Located on 450 acres three miles
southeast of Houston's central business district, the University of
Houston campus comprises 13 colleges and schools offering close to 80
programs in a wide range of bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees.
The University Park campus has a current enrollment of over 33,000
students, 8,000 of whom are enrolled in graduate studies.

CATALOGING/REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
St. Lawrence University, a private, non-denominational liberal arts coll
ege located between the Adirondack Mountains and the St. Lawrence
River, is seeking a dynamic, innovative person to assume a position
with shared responsibilities in cataloging (2/3 time) and reference (1/3
time). The library has a fully integrated Innovative Interfaces Inc.
library system which includes automated acquisitions, cataloging,
circulation, serials control, and OPAC. Reporting to the University
Librarian, the successful candidate will have primary responsibility
for the cataloging of library materials, for managing the Cataloging
Subsystem, and for bibliographic maintenance operations. Responsibilitie
s will include: revising non-DLC contributed cataloging, supervising
three FTE paraprofessionals, implementing OCLC and OPAC
enhancements/changes which affect cataloging procedures, performing
original cataloging, and establishing cataloging procedures and monograp
hic cataloging policy. Reference duties will include participation
in reference desk services (including some evening and weekend hours)
and involvement in reference services planning and collection devel-
opment, with opportunities in online searching and instructional
activities as time and interests allow.
REQUIRED: ALA accredited MLS; minimum of one year professional
cataloging experience utilizing OCLC or another bibliographic
utility; knowledge of AACR2, LCSH, and LC classification; original
cataloging experience; evidence of commitment to providing high
quality reference services; effective communication, problem-
solving, and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED: Experience in an OPAC environment; reference experience;
academic library experience; supervisory experience; additional
advanced degree; and a working knowledge of at least one
foreign language.
12 month contract; liberal benefits; faculty status with one
month's vacation.
STARTING DATE: on or before February 1, 1993 preferred.
SALARY RANGE: $25,000 - $27,000
