Michael Hart tells us that he thinks individuals are less likely to post
"negative" notes in public than they are in private. I would disagree. It
has been my experience that people are far more likely to post negative
notes publicly, probably because it has a more impersonal feel. An e-mail
message sent to one person makes the interpersonal nature of the exchange
far more obvious. I have found, when making my occasional forays into
"flame-bait" material, that the negative messages are more likely to appear
on the list, but are often outnumbered by the positive messages that
come via e-mail. Fertile ground for communication research, but hard to
observe without the observation affecting the results...
