I have been waiting to see whether anyone else would mention
something about a conference sponsored by Telestrategies, Inc.
called Internet: a Government Network Going Private. It's
addressed to "Executives" and the opening paragraph says:
"The Internet, a government-owned high-speed data network inter-
commecting academic and R&D facilities nationwide, has been
targeted for privatization. The consequences of doing this are
tremendous. To begin with, a privatized Internet has the potential
to become the first national public megabit multi-media service
network infrastructure. ... A major hurdle for those carriers
looking to Internet for their inter- and intra-enterprise
networking solutions if the complex and poorly understood transition
process of going from a government-owned to a private network.
...
TheY conference will provide a forum where leaders in the
telecommunications and computer industries can jointly explore the
impact of a privatized internet and examine the related issues
of access, cost, control and competition."

The conference was held April 21-22 in Reston, VA. Does anyone
on Pacs-l know anything more about this? Is there a need to be
alarmed about this privatization?
