Open source software presents libraries with limited budgets an
opportunity to focus those budgets on building collections rather than
buying expensive software licenses. What many librarians need to use
open source software is a hand getting started. If you have basic
familiarity with Unix, Linux, or BSD operating systems, this
preconference may be of interest to you. School Librarians may
especially find programs on Jake, WIBS, and MARC.pm of interest.
LITA presents the hands-on preconference "Working with Open Source
Software", on Friday, June 14, 2002 at Emory University in Atlanta.
This workshop provides hands-on experience in using and implementing
Open Source tools and software as they relate to libraries.
Held at Emory University, participants will attend an opening overview
session and then will attend 3 out of 9 break-out sessions (maximum 2
people per computer) focused on a particular Open Source tool or
software, the day will end with an hour long Q&A. Each break-out
session will feature a different Open Source software and be taught by
an expert for that particular technology. Break-out sessions will be
held in computer labs allowing for hands-on learning with two people per
computer station.
The following Open Source Softwares will be taught throughout the day;
Citation Manager, Open Archives Initiative (OAI), PEARS, SiteSearch (2
sessions), MARC.pm, MyLibrary, Jake, and WIBS (Room/Computer
Scheduler).
Pre-requisite: Familiarity and experience with the Linux operating
system.
