The oldest library in New York City is seeking a full-time Cataloger/Systems
Assistant. The New York Society Library, founded in 1754, is a subscription
library located on New York's Upper East Side, close to Fifth Avenue and the
'Museum mile.'
We are looking for someone with valid cataloging experience as well as an
understanding of - coupled with a desire to learn more about - computers,
automated systems, networks, servers, and the web. Duties will be split ca.
60% Cataloging and 40% Systems, although a measure of fluidity will be
necessary to deal with changing needs and priorities.
The attainment of an M.L.S. and a thorough understanding of AACR2 and LCSH
are a given. Experience in the use of a server-based library automation
system and/or OCLC's CatME product is highly desirable; experience with Geac
Advance desirable. Serials and electronic media cataloging experience is a
plus.
Must possess at least a high degree of comfort with PCs and networks.
Should be able to troubleshoot simple computer problems and possess the
ability to understand new software products and serve as a staff resource in
the implementation and use of new software. We are looking for someone who
desires to learn more about automation in general and library automation in
particular. Web authoring and/or programming experience highly desirable.
Understanding of Windows NT 4.0 and Exchange Server a plus.
Must be able to work collegially and effectively in a fairly busy
environment. Good written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
Must be willing to work some Saturdays from September through June. Salary
