The Heads of Tech. Services of Medium-Sized Academic Libraries
Discussion Group will be presenting the following discussion at the
annual ALA in San Francisco on Saturday, June 16, 200, from 9:30 am to
11:00 am:
TECHNICAL SERVICES COMPETENCIES FOR OUR LIBRARIANS: HOW DO WE FIND
QUALIFIED CANDIDATES IN A SHRINKING POOL?
The discussion will be lead by two outstanding librarians who have spent
much of their careers studying and dealing with this very real problem
for academic libraries.
Janet Hill, the Associate Director for Technical Services at the
University of Colorado Libraries in Boulder, has formed and served on
several national task forces, written articles and papers and founded a
technical services interest group in ALISE. She will discuss this
problem and some of the solutions she has recommended for the library
profession.
Derrie Perez, the Acting Dean of the University of South Florida Library
System and Assistant Professor of Library Science has been serving as
the Chair of the ASERL Education Committee. The Education Committee has
recently submitted to ASERL, a working draft of the report "Competencies
for Research Librarians." She will discuss that paper as well as her
experiences both as an administrator and as an education in library
science. After their presentations, there will be time for a discussion
of this problem.
The discussion will take place at the Westin St. Francis, in the Olympic
Room North/South.
Plan to attend - It will be a great discussion!
