Diversity and Staff Development Librarian
Vacancy Announcement

Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and
Chapel Hill.  One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic,
corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich
diversity of cultural events.  While the Triangle consistently leads the
lists of desirable American communities, the North Carolina State
University Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the
Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction
with students and faculty to further the educational mission of NC State
University. In the past seven years, the NCSU Libraries has made an
unprecedented rise through the ranks of the Association of Research
Libraries to its current position of 35th among the 111 member
libraries.

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Diversity and Staff Development Librarian to provide leadership for
the development, implementation, and evaluation of diversity and staff
development initiatives and programs.

Responsibilities
Under direction from the Assistant Director for Organizational Design
and Learning:
•Serves as ex-officio member of Libraries Diversity Committee charged
with planning and implementing programs designed to encourage a climate
where a diverse staff and user population feel welcomed, valued, and
respected.
• Assists with recruiting initiatives, including the Libraries Fellows
Program, to increase the number of qualified minority applicants for
positions. Develops outreach efforts to attract people from diverse
backgrounds to the library profession.
• Represents the Libraries in campus, regional, and national diversity
efforts.
• Researches and recommends best practices from the field. Recommends
and conducts analytical and statistical studies to evaluate
effectiveness of diversity initiatives.
• Serves as ex-officio member of the Libraries Staff Learning and
Development Committee charged with planning a comprehensive program of
continuous learning, training, and development for library staff.
• Assesses needs and interests; recommends programs and other means of
promoting learning and development; guides decisions on how training
should be delivered (using in-house, university, contracted, and/or
other resources); and evaluates programs.
• Coordinates new employee orientation.
• As a member of Personnel Services management team, helps plan and
administer programs that meet the strategic training and learning needs
of library employees, including supervisory and management training.
Conducts orientation and exit sessions.
• Participates in planning, serves on library-wide committees, task
forces, and teams, and is expected to be active professionally.

Qualifications
Required:
• ALA-accredited MLS.
• Previous experience in minority recruitment /diversity program OR
previous experience in staff development/training.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly,
knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing.
 • Demonstrated ability to make effective presentations to groups.

Preferred:
• At least two years experience in an academic or research library.

The library system consists of a central library and branch libraries

staff of 309 FTE, the Libraries has over 2.9 million volumes, acquires
more than 37,000 print and electronic serials, and has a total annual
budget of approximately $20 million, with approximately $8 million
allocated to collections. The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for
NC LIVE (North Carolina LIbraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type
library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens
of North Carolina.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, and
the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and NC
State form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined
resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets
totaling more than $29 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with education
and experience. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank.
Benefits include:  26 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; health
insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO); and state, TIAA/CREF or
other retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life,
disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.
Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North
Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
