HEAD OF ACCESS SERVICES (pay grade 130)
Department:     J. ROBERT VAN PELT LIBRARY
MINIMUM $29,541 - MAXIMUM $47,266

SUMMARY: Manage and provide leadership to the Library's front line access
services including circulation, course reserves, and interlibrary
loan/document delivery (ILL/DD). Manage the Library's public hardware
devices. Collaborate with appropriate library staff to resolve problems
associated with user access to the Library's electronic resources. Promote
excellent customer service. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. (Other duties
may be assigned.) 
· Work collaboratively to develop goals and projects that further the
library's strategic plan. 
· Participate in planning new and enhanced user services that support the
Library's mission. 
· Provide leadership and expertise in developing access services with an
emphasis on digital delivery. 
· Design and implement access services policies and procedures; articulate
policies to users. 
· Collaborate with appropriate staff members to resolve problems arising
from users' inability to identify, locate, or obtain Library resources
(i.e. contacting vendors regarding electronic access problems, and solving
problematic interlibrary loan or storage retrieval requests). 
· Collaborate with all Library units to enable a seamless interface of
access services to on-site and off-site users. 
· Train, supervise, and coach Access Services staff; analyze workflow and
recommend improvements. 
· Work collaboratively with Reference, Instruction, and Government
Information Services (RIGIS) to develop training for staff and students. 
· Communicate, mediate, and assess with all library units, the
effectiveness of current access services operations. 
· Maintain currency in emerging access issues. 
· Collaborate with all appropriate library units to develop statistical
counts, data collection, user surveys, departmental reports, user
statistics, etc. Maintain circulation tables, calendars, etc. 
· Negotiate ILL/DD agreements with other libraries and document suppliers. 
· Direct and maintain an efficient course reserves system for paper and
electronic information. 
· Design and implement policies and workflow for digitizing projects within
unit. Share expertise with other library units. 
· Oversee operations for public devices such as photocopiers, printers,
PC's, etc. 
· Serve on library and university committees. 
· Participate in local, regional, state and national professional activities. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Functional and administrative supervision is
exercised over exempt and support staff and student assistants. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 
REQUIRED: 
· Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited
institution. 
· Two years current professional experience in an access or public services
position. 
· Supervisory experience. 

DESIRABLE: 
· Professional experience in a research or academic library. 
· Professional experience using the Voyager library management system.

· Demonstrated ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve access issues.

environment with all levels of personnel. 
· Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and written/oral communication
skills. 
· Demonstrated ability to organize, meet deadlines, perform multiple tasks
simultaneously, and prioritize. 
· Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and take initiative. 
· Demonstrated knowledge of the service modules of an automated library
management system. 

DESIRABLE: 
· Demonstrated ability to excel and be productive in a team environment. 
· Demonstrated ability to utilize new and emerging technologies for the
delivery of library services. 
· Demonstrated commitment to the service and educational roles of academic
libraries.
