Payroll title: Computer Resource Manager II

Salary: $62,500-$86,400

The Libraries of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) invite applications from innovative professionals with significant management experience and a strong record of user support to fill the position of Systems Department Head. The successful candidate will fill an important management position with significant operations and budgetary responsibility and will provide leadership in an environment that strongly supports services based upon information technology and technological innovation. This position directs a department consisting of 14 professional and technical staff with full responsibility for the technology infrastructure and related user support for the UCSD Libraries, including INNOPAC, network operations, server management, workstation services, and a staff Help Desk unit. The Systems Department works in close communication with the Libraries' Software Engineering Department, whose primary responsibilities are for applications programming and web development.

Responsibilities

  - Reports directly to the Associate University Librarian-User Support Services.
  - Ensures highest quality of service and support for all users of the Libraries' electronic information systems.
  - Provides leadership, organization, and management for the Systems Department.
  - Works closely with the Head of the Software Engineering Department to ensure reliable and effective interoperability between technology infrastructure and technology applications.
  - Provides strategic leadership for the continued development of the Libraries' technology infrastructure and actively seeks ways to improve services and reduce costs through innovative use of existing resources, expansion of resources, and application of new technology.
  - Develops and manages annual information technology budget of over $1.2 million.
  - Ensures best industry practices to maintain data integrity and network and systems reliability.
  - Maintains awareness of national and University of California system wide issues regarding library information technology and information resources and helps identify and resolve these issues through appropriate professional activities.

Required Qualifications

  - Demonstrated commitment to library public services.
  - Demonstrated user focus and ability to thoughtfully and effectively meet diverse user needs.
  - Exceptional initiative, leadership, acumen, and flexibility.
  - Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills in interactions with both technical staff and non-technical end users.
  - Superior oral and written communication skills.
  - 3-5 years management experience including supervision, staff motivation, conflict resolution, planning and organizing, problem and quantitative analysis.
  - Working knowledge of budget preparation, cost projections, and cost accounting.
  - Strong grasp of the current state of information technology and ability to continually integrate new technology.
  - Broad knowledge of computer systems design and of the integration of hardware, software, and networks in a highly interactive computing environment.
  - Working knowledge of end user workstation hardware and software.
  - Working knowledge of TCP/IP network management, operation, and maintenance. 
  - Committed to continuous learning for self and supervised staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  - Master's degree in library science, computer science, information science, or management.
  - Experience managing an integrated library system.
  - Direct experience with library public services. 
  - Management experience in an academic library with extensive computerized resources.
  - Working knowledge of developments in metadata and digital libraries.
