Hi All,
Well, I don't know why I do such things, but I thought I'd venture a
reply to Jack Kessler's request that folks discuss Steve Coffman's
"Building Earth's
Largest Library" article.
I did *skim* all three articles linked in Jack's message and though
perhaps a more thorough reading would change my opinion, I doubt it would
do more than waste more of my time.
I am all for enthusiasm and the furthering of the service angle of the
library profession ... and a big, quick, splashy, fancy presence on the
Web, similar to Amazon (or the St. Louis Blues homepage for that matter)
could do wonders maybe even for me as I approach retirement.
Only the privileged ... I'm talking about us ... mostly White, mostly
rich, mostly highly educated ... could embrace such a scenario as we find
in "Building Earth's Largest Library." Supply PC's and connect time to our
Hispanic Americans, Afro-Americans and Native Americans, and then maybe,
just maybe this could get me excited. As it is, it's just another societal
thing that has potential for increasing the gap between the haves and
have-nots ... more economic, intellectual, and informational racism.
Speculation is nice. Intellectual curiosity is fine, too. Let's
work on looking at the whole problem instead of focussing on what's
feasible for the technological elite.
TNX
