The Welch Library is looking for a librarian to work with
faculty, staff and students of the Johns Hopkins Medical
Institutions (JHMI) in the area of scientific communication.
JHMI includes the Schools of Medicine, Public Health and
Nursing, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Welch Medical
Library is a leader in the new area of knowledge management
which offers a new role for librarians in the scientific
communication process.
The personal information management specialist will be
responsible for finding and/or designing tools to help
scientists manage knowledge. This person will work closely
with clients to present current products and services, to
teach and consult about how to use them, to gather feedback
and measure product effectiveness. When needed, the
specialist may also work to design new products. All
activity is focused toward the goal of fostering effective
scientific communication. The specialist will focus on the
basic and biological sciences.
Qualifications. Required: MLS.; experience working with
different computing platforms, applications and the Internet;
an understanding of research and academic environments and
the role of information in such a setting; and
excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred:
graduate degree in the biological sciences, experience
developing information technology products, and experience in an
academic setting.
The position is available immediately. For priority
consideration, applications should be received by October 21,

Minimum salary is $31,000. Benefits include health insurance,
22 vacation days and 12 sick days/year, and excellent retirement plan.

How Much: $32,000
Serves as reference librarian in 500,000 volume university library.
Performs general reference work with emphasis on the social sciences,
including weekend and evening hours. Functions as liaison to designated
academic departments to facilitate the delivery of library services and
the selection of library materials. Develops bibliographic guides and
conducts workshops for classes. May teach library-related undergraduate
credit courses.
SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinates the development of reference
and index collections in consultation with other Library Program
faculty. Assumes lead role in the development of instructional
techniques and the application of computer-based technologies for
library use instruction, and serves as resource person in this regard.
Develops, as appropriate, printed materials for general library
instruction. May deliver outreach instructional services to various
groups such as international students.
Twelve-month tenure track position, with initial appointment at the
rank of Assistant Professor. Twenty-four days annual leave. Salary
$32,000. Position available January 16, 1992; negotiable starting date.

QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited program. A minimum of three
years professional experience in academic library reference work in
an automated setting. Familiarity with academic library reference
collection development. Substantial experience with bibliographic
instruction, including knowledge of computer-based instructional
technologies.
