Take a look at the pages of the branch libraries in the San Francisco
Public Library system. The pages are maintained by a company called
CitySearch7.  The branch pages have advertising on them. I would guess
that in exchange for maintaining the branch pages, CitySearch7 gets to
sell advertising on them. Interesting concept.

They don't accept commercial advertising.  They accept 'sponsorships' as
donations.  o-)

UWEBD@LISTSERV.MUOHIO.EDU has had considerable discussion of this issue
in the last couple of months.  That list is mainly university
webmasters.  Some universities have done it, though I can't tell you
which ones right now.  Since it has university wide impact, I'd imagine
it would be prudent to contact appropriate "higher authorities" before
getting into it.
