POSITION:  Preservation Librarian

APPOINTMENT RANK: Assistant or Associate Professor

SALARY:  Minimum $30,000, Assistant Professor
Minimum $37,000, Associate Professor
AVAILABLE:  November 1, 1999

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks a dynamic librarian to take
an active role in the implementation of a comprehensive preservation
program for the Libraries.  Working with the Head of Preservation, the
Collection Development & Management Team, and representatives from all
areas of the Libraries, the Preservation Librarian assesses collections
and environment; develops tactical goals; implements projects; and
supervises binding and conservation.  Reports to the Head of
Preservation, and is a member of the Collection Development & Management
(CDM) Team. The Head of Preservation reports to the Dean of Libraries.
Preservation has received a renewed focus and emphasis in the Libraries'
evolving organization.  Activities and responsibilities formerly
dispersed are being integrated and consolidated into a preservation
program with committed leadership and support. Three staff members in
the binding unit and one full time conservation position are devoted to
preservation activities. Student assistants provide an additional work
force.  The current allocation for preservation treatments is 3% of
expenditures for materials in a total materials budget of nearly $5
million.  Supplemental funds are available from grants and endowments.
Growing emphasis is being placed on the preservation of digital
materials in the Libraries and on campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Provides day-to-day supervision of projects and
activities within the preservation program to enable the Libraries to
maintain and extend the useful life of its information resources.  In a
collaborative environment under the leadership of the Head of
Preservation, plans, organizes, and leads activities and projects for
the Libraries.  Monitors general conformance with library preservation
practices and procedures, making recommendations for modifications where
appropriate to assure the observance of best practices.   Supervises the
Binding and Conservation Unit.  Member of the Collection  Development &
Management Team and the Preservation Matrix, a policy-making and
advisory group composed of representatives from several library teams.
Conducts informational and training programs for all staff and the
public.  Advises the Head of Preservation on the Libraries' state of
preparedness for damage and disaster response.  Assists with the
identification of appropriate external funding sources and the
preparation of grant proposals.  Represents the Libraries in regional
and national preservation initiatives, such as SOLINET and DLF.

OPPORTUNITIES:  The Preservation Librarian will advance the integration
of disparate, ongoing activities into the preservation program.  The
Preservation Matrix  receives an annual allocation from the information
resources budget; funds have been spent on reformatting, including
preservation photocopying and microfilm purchases.    A small
conservation laboratory is available.  Binding and reformatting are
outsourced.  Limited repairs and refurbishing are accomplished
in-house.   The Libraries organizational structure fosters cooperation
and offers the potential for preservation advocacy across library
teams.  The Libraries have participated in national preservation
microfilming grants, and are a charter member of the Digital Library
Federation.
QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA-accredited MLS degree.  Broad knowledge of
preservation and conservation, including technical, physical, and
bibliographic aspects, based on work experience, course work, or related
training.  Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications
skills; ability to make lead projects to successful conclusion;
commitment to a collaborative work environment.
Preferred: Managerial and supervisory experience.  Familiarity with
library binding practices; experience with the use of digital technology
in preservation; in obtaining grants and other outside funding, and with
commercial contracts.  Work experience in an academic or research
library.
BENEFITS: Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months. This is a
tenure track appointment. Library faculty must meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure. Annual leave is accrued at the
rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per
month. Faculty have their choice of a state retirement plan or
TIAA/CREF. Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are
paid for the employee by the University. Group health and life insurance
plans are available. Tuition remission is available for all university
employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to
dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Carnegie Research
Level One institution, enrolls approximately 26,000 students from every
state in the United States and approximately 100 other countries. As
Tennessee's comprehensive campus, UTK offers more doctoral programs than
any other institution in the state, and its faculty attract nearly $80
million annually for sponsored research programs. UTK is one of 27
higher education institutions holding the distinction of being both a
land-grant institution and state university.
The UTK Libraries, with an annual budget of almost $10 million, holds 2
million volumes and receives approximately 14,000 current serials. The
Libraries system includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches
on the Knoxville campus: Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine, Map, Music,
and University Archives and Special Collections. A fifth branch, the
Social Work Library, is located in Nashville. Over three hundred persons
are employed, including 49 librarians, 8 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150
students. UTK Libraries is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center for Research Libraries. The UTK
Libraries installed a client-server integrated system in 1997. The
Libraries also offers a Web-based information system and access to a
variety of electronic information sources.
