The author is correct. This is too good to be true.
First of all the estimate for the parts he listed is too low a 386 sx motherboa
rd is 300 to 500 dollars alone. Then the drive is another $300. I do not reco
mmend reusing the power supply unless it is an AT power supply or better. In a
ddtion there is the labor involved in building what is essentially a new comput
er. This computer would have a 90 warranty on the parts and that's all. I don
't believe that it would be covered under the university contract.
Also, any parts which are reused are still ancient parts which would have to be
replaced when the break.
We have tried motherboard replacement twice now with dead AT's. Once it worked
fine, we never could get the other one working right. The actual cost to do th
is type of upgrade is more like $700 - $900 and given that a Dell 386 sx with a
1 year warranty and vga color monitor, DOS, mouse, windows is around $1199 for
our University (GW) there is little reason for incurring this expense. It woul
spare parts.
Simply replace the obsolete machine and use it for spare parts.
