Solution provided by INCOLSA INSPIRE technical support staff:
*******************
Solution for netscape v.4 is pasted below. You can ask the guy to contact me
if he has any questions.
Juck.
_________________________________________
Specific Website Lockdown for PC's running Netscape V4.0x
The following instructions allow you to restrict Internet access on any PC
running Netscape V4.0x to any sites you choose to allow. You will be
creating a non-existent proxy-server in your Netscape setup as part of this
process - so this system will not work if you already use a proxy-server for
web access.
Lockdown Instructions:
1. Start Netscape Navigator/Communicator V4.0x and connect to the Internet.
2. Download the file
http://www.fortres.com/Products/info_cool/coolerconfigur/netscp4a.ccf onto
your computer. (You will need this file later in the installation - save it
to your Windows95/98 Desktop for now)
3. --- Ignore this step ---
4. Select EDIT from the menu at the top of the screen
5. Select PREFERENCES
6. Set the NetScape homepage to http://www.whatever.net
7. DOUBLE-Click on ADVANCED
8. Select PROXIES
9. Check MANUAL PROXY CONFIGURATION
10. Click VIEW
11. In the HTTP field type: THIS STATION IS RESTRICTED(or choose your own
error message)
12. In the SECURITY field type: THIS STATION IS RESTRICTED
13. In the FTP field type: THIS STATION IS RESTRICTED
14. In the GOPHER field type: THIS STATION IS RESTRICTED
15. In the WAIS field type: THIS STATION IS RESTRICTED
16. Leave the SOCKS field empty
17. In the EXCEPTIONS box at the foot of the screen type the following web
sites (or your own) separated with COMMAS:
inspire-indiana.net
ebsco.com
ebscohost.com
epnet.com
palni.edu
noc.ind.net
18. Click OK
19. Click OK
Your copy of Netscape 4.0x should now be locked down to the sites you have
chosen. If the terminal user tries to venture outside the 'allowed'
websites, an error message should be displayed.
To ensure users cannot 'break out' by altering the Netscape Preferences you
have set - you should purchase a copy of COOLER from the Fortres Grand
Corporation. The software is available for download at
http://www.fortres.com/assets/cooler.exe (30 day trial version). Download
it now.
20. Install COOLER on your PC. During the Installation process you will be
asked to provide a password for accessing the COOLER configuration. PLEASE
KEEP THIS PASSWORD SAFE,, you will need it every time you change your
configuration.
21. Restart your PC
22. The COOLER program icon should be at the bottom RIGHT-HAND of your
screen on the Windows Toolbar. The Icon is a picture of a safe.
23. Place your mouse pointer over the Cooler Icon and click your RIGHT mouse
button. Select CONFIGURE from the menu that appears.
24. Enter your Password.
25. When the Cooler screen appears, select OPEN from the FILE menu in the
cooler window.
26. Open the file netscp4a.ccf from your Windows95/98 desktop. (the file
you downloaded at Step 2).
27. Choose SAVE AS from the FILE menu in the Cooler window.
28. Save the file as default.ccf in the /cooler/config files/ directory and
replace the existing default.ccf file.
29. Close Cooler by choosing EXIT from the FILE menu in the Cooler window.
30. Restart your PC.
When you next start Netscape Navigator V4.0x the browser should be csecurely
locked-down. The Netscape preferences can now only be changed by unloading
the Cooler program which cannot be done without the administrative password.
I WANT TO ADD SOME OTHER INTERNET SITES TO THE LOCKED DOWN TERMINAL. HOW DO
I DO THAT?
To add more 'allowed' websites to this setup:
1. Place your mouse pointer over the Cooler Icon (at the bottom of the
screen) and click your RIGHT mouse button. Select UNLOAD from the menu that
appears.
2. Enter your Cooler Password.
3. Start Netscape V4.0x
4. Select EDIT from the menu at the top of the screen
5. Select PREFERENCES
6. DOUBLE-Click on ADVANCED
7. Select PROXIES
8. Check MANUAL PROXY CONFIGURATION
9. Click VIEW
10. Add your additional web addresses in the EXCEPTIONS box at the bottom of
the screen. (Remember, web addresses should be separated by commas)
11. Click OK
12. Click OK
13. Close all programs and restart your PC
HEY! I CHANGED MY MIND, HOW DO I UNINSTALL ALL THIS STUFF?
To Permanently uninstall these modifications:
1. Place your mouse pointer over the Cooler Icon (at the bottom of the
screen) and click your RIGHT mouse button. Select UNLOAD from the menu that
appears.
2. Enter your Cooler password.
3. At the bottom LEFT of your screen on the windows toolbar click START then
SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL
4. From the control panel window double-click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
5. Click COOLER in the list of programs available then click ADD/REMOVE.
6. Enter your Cooler password and confirm that you wish to uninstall the
cooler program.
7. Close all windows programs and restart your PC now.
8. Start Netscape V4.0x
9. Select EDIT from the menu at the top of the screen
10. Select PREFERENCES
11. DOUBLE-Click on ADVANCED
12. Select PROXIES
13. Check DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET
14. Click OK

Subject: Limiting Internet access to one or two sites
----------------------------Original message----------------------------
I would like to provide access from our public PCs to one or two
specified Websites only. The Start menu on these PCs already features
the catalogue and a wide range of locally held electronic resources; I
would simply like to add one or two shortcuts for Websites without any
danger that, once Internet Explorer had loaded, users would be able to
go wherever they liked on the Web. Does anyone know of any software
that would achieve this?
