What's a Librarian To Do? The Filtering Dilemma

SUMMARY
This teleconference is produced by SOLINET in cooperation with the
University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science.
This look into one of the most controversial topics in the profession
today will bring together a distinguished panel of information
professionals to address the following:
Clifford Lynch (CNI) will provide an overview of the technology and
provoke the audience into thinking about filtering in light of current
and future technological developments in a global networked environment.
Robert Huslhof (SOLINET) will demonstrate software packages and discuss
the technology requirements and options for running filtering software.
From a legal prospective, Tim Coggins (University of Richmond Law
Library) will discuss how the courts, Congress, and state legislators
are reacting to filtering.
Judith Krug (ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom) will present the ALA's
viewpoint and address key elements within ALA's Library Bill Of Rights.
A panel of library staff will discuss the pros and cons of the issue and
share their experiences in their own filtered/unfiltered environments.
The role of acceptable use policies for Internet access and the key
issues they should address will be presented.
Finally, a panel of the presenters will summarize the dilemma facing
librarians and outline the options available.
