DATA AVAILABILITY ANNOUNCEMENT

Title:
Government Crowd-Out of Private Contributions to Public Radio: An
        Empirical Study

URL: http://dpls.dacc.wisc.edu/radio/index.html

Unique Identification Number:
        BA-008-001-1-1-United States-DPLS-1990

Data File:
Microsoft Excel 97 and tab-delimited ASCII file

Summary:
Publicly available data from IRS Form 990 tax returns, which
are required annually f all tax-exempt organizations, were used to
construct a short panel of noncommercial radio stations. The panel
consists of 419 observations on 104 different stations. Estimated
"donative revenue functions" (DRFs) are included for different
classes of stations located in the United States from 1990-1996.
These functions relate fund-raising expenditures to contributions
from private individuals. Estimated dependence of DRFs on
government subsidization is also listed, allowing for study of
"crowd out" effects of private contributions.

Geographic Coverage:
        United States

Descriptors:
Public goods, non-profit sector, public radio

Technical Notes:
The data is stored in a Microsoft Excel 97 spreadsheet. DPLS staff
converted the spreadsheet file to a tab-delimited data file and
wrote a SPSS setup statement file to help users read in the
tab-delimited data file. Both the Excel file and the raw ASCII
tab-delimited file can be downloaded from this web site.
