N.B. The following includes a list of words or terms,
selected by the poster, which cause messages to be
censored when the filtering software Cybersitter
is used. Some of these terms might be offensive to
some PACS-L readers.

Librarians and freedom-of-information volks --
I just received the following, that included a lengthy list of words and
phrases that allegedly cause messages to be censored AUTOMATICALLY at all
net facilities -- e.g., schools, universities, libraries, community
centers, etc. -- that use CYBERSITTER to screen "feelthy" messages.
There are, of course, a large number of words that are the "usual suspects"
-- that I have deleted (use the indicated websites to get the unexpurgated
version). But please consider the words that I have left in the following
excerpt ... and their impact on access to personal messages, discussions,
information access and educational content -- especially at those sites
that are tax-supported and those that *should* provide public access.
Among other things, consider their impacts on school-age, post-secondary
and adult access to news articles, modern and classical literature and
medical, phychological, sociological, physiological and biological
discussions and content. Just for starters!

I thought you folks (you have have received a blind copy) might be
interested in this. I have only glanced at it, but I noticed it contains
glaad.com and doesn't contain aclu - I guess civil liberties are OK with
cybersitter as long as they're for straight people. TIP - they have some
sites listed that sound interesting and might be worth checking out

Terms Filtered by Cybersitter
Terms Filtered by the ``Cybersitter'' Program
Solid Oak, which sells a software program known as ``Cybersitter'', makes
available by anonymous ftp from <ftp://acorn.solidoak.com> its ftp server a
list of the terms that are censored by that program.
You can download the file from
<ftp://acorn.solidoak.com/Anonymous/pub/cywin0.opt>
ftp://acorn.solidoak.com/Anonymous/pub/cywin0.opt.
The only trouble is that the file is encrypted.
But the good news is that the encryption program that Solid Oak uses is
ridiculously easy to decode. The encryption consists simply of XORing each
byte of the encrypted file with the binary representation of hexidecimal 94.
But the bad news is that I cannot post a program here that would allow you
to decrypt the file because of the United States Government's export
regulations relating to cryptography.
But the good news is that I have used a program that I found on the
internet to decrypt the encrypted file which I downloaded on April 26,
1997. (Since the decrypted file is considerably shorter than the encrypted
file, it appears that the decryption program filtered out a considerable
number of non-printing characters.) It is interesting to note that many of
the censored terms, like ``dontbuycybersitter'', for example, do not fall
within any of the categories that Cybersitter is supposed to filter.

I just received this update, about the word/phrase list that I just
forwarded, allegedly used by CYBERSITTER for its automated censorship
tasks. (No, I don't know the writer, nor the "Bennett" nor the "Brian"
mentioned by the writer. Check Wired News and news.com for details.)
