INSTRUCTION/MEDIA LIBRARIAN I/II/III

The David Adamany Undergraduate Library is a dynamic new concept in
integrated information services for the undergraduate learner.  The primary
goal of this newly opened facility is to help students learn in the
multimedia-driven, technological environment of tomorrow.  Reporting to the
Director of the Undergraduate Library, the Instruction/Media Librarian has
the following responsibilities:

Instructional Responsibilities

Teaches information component of UGE classes, works with undergraduate
faculty to develop course related information literacy sessions, and
teaches PowerPoint and other media applications (may include evening or
weekend sessions).

Collection Development

Selects and orders nonprint media, approval books, and textbooks, serves as
liaison with Acquisitions, keeps librarians informed of budget information
and deadlines.

Media Responsibilities

Serves as liaison with Media Services , develops policies and procedures
related to the use of electronic media, works with other staff members to
design and maintain the UGL Web site, and produces media instructional
presentations and tutorials

Reference Responsibilities

Works assigned shifts on Information Desk or serves as backup, participates
in proposed research consultation program, and works with Information
Services Librarian to identify needed reference materials.

Professional Responsibilities

Achieves excellence and recognition in the profession through publication
and assuming active roles in professional organizations. Meets or exceeds
requirements of Employment Security Status (ESS) and/or promotion.

Information Literacy Responsibilities

The Undergraduate Library is committed to a philosophy focused on
empowering students to become discriminating, critical consumers of
information.  The most important responsibility of all librarians is to
guide students to successfully identify and satisfy their information
needs.  This is an important objective of all UGE instructional sessions
and should carry over into all the librarians' interactions with users.

Technology Responsibilities

Acquires and maintains sophisticated technical skills including proficiency
in using productivity software and library computer applications.  Teaches
drop-in sessions in Windows, Word, E-mail, Netscape, PowerPoint, Access,
and library databases.  Solves common hardware and software problems that
students experience or that might interfere with the success of
instructional sessions.

General Information

Required: ALA accredited MLS. Demonstrated ability and commitment to work
with undergraduate clientele.  Preferred: Previous experience in an
academic library, especially instruction. Salary: Librarian I minimum
salary: $33,000, Librarian III minimum salary: $39,000.  Position available

The University of South Alabama invites applications and nominations for
the position of Director of University Libraries. The position is a
twelve month appointment, with faculty status and tenure eligibility.

Responsibilities:  Reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic
Affairs.  Responsible for the University Library and the Biomedical
Library and their proper administration which will include the
following; formulating and supervising policies and regulations governing
the use of the libraries, materials, and services; supervising the
libraries'faculty and staff, including making appointment recommendations
to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs or Personnel Relations;
planning and development, including collection development; preparing
budgets and supervising expenditures; developing and maintaining
procedures for gathering and analyzing data on use of library resources;
working with a state-wide consortium for resource sharing.

Qualifications: Minimum educational qualification is an MLS (or
equivalent) from an ALA accredited institution. A second master's or a
doctorate is preferred. Five-year minimum experience in academic library
administration is required. The candidate should possess demonstrated
knowledge of existing and emerging library technologies and demonstrated
experience in financial and staff management, creative problem-solving,
effective organizational communication and leadership.

The Libraries: Consist of the University Library and the Biomedical
Library. The University Library collections are housed on the main
campus, with a 35,000 sq. ft. addition in the advanced stages of
planning. The University Archives and the USA Baldwin County branch
library are located on satellite campuses. The Biomedical Library is
located on the main campus and at the USA Medical Center. The combined
libraries have a professional staff of 29 and a clerical staff of 48,
collections of over 400,000 volumes and an annual budget of
approximately $4.5 million. The USA Libraries currently use the NOTIS
automation system, but have begun to review UNIX-based systems with
plans for conversion in the near future. The Libraries are members of
OCLC, SOLINET and Network of Alabama Academic Libraries (NAAL). The
successful candidate will be expected to assume a significant role in
all phases of anticipated library renovation, expansion and

The University: The University of South Alabama is a major public
institution on the Gulf Coast. Celebrating its 35th year, the
institution has an enrollment of approximately 11,000 and consists of
ten colleges and schools, which include Allied Health, Arts and
Sciences, Business, Computer & Information Sciences, Continuing
Education, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing and the Graduate
School. Degrees are offered at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral
levels.

The City: The Mobile metropolitan area, located on attractive Mobile
Bay, has a population of 450,000. The climate is subtropical to
temperate and the nearby Gulf of Mexico provides outstanding
recreational opportunities.  Mobile was founded in 1702 and, in addition
to serving as an historic cultural center, is a well-established center
of finance, industry and international trade along the central Gulf
Coast region. Mobile is among the nation's leading port cities.
