POSITION: Head, Media Services
Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure Track
AVAILABLE: June 1, 1999
RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for overall design of media services
and classroom technologies primarily for the Springfield campus, including
facilitating the media technology for a major expansion and remodeling of
Meyer Library. Provides service, consultation and coordination for the SMS
system. Coordinates and supervises Educational Media, Curriculum and
Audiovisual Resource Center, and Microforms/Newspapers/Computer Lab units.
Supervises 8 full-time staff and 45 part-time student Assistants. Reports
to the Dean of Library Services.
Educational Media provides delivery of equipment, multi-media development
support, graphics design, and equipment repair and installation.
Curriculum and Audiovisual Resource Center provides a wide range of text
and curriculum materials in a variety of formats for use by faculty, staff
and students.
Microforms and Newspapers house the majority of microformat materials in
the Libraries and provide for all types of reprographic activity including
traditional photocopying, microform printing and microform duplication.
Current issues of newspapers with the microform permanent copies are housed
there. A Campus Computer Lab is located in this unit and supervised by
unit staff.
Coordinates and facilitates the design of classroom technologies, media
systems and facility technology components for the campus. Develops and
implements classroom standards to facilitate ease of use, training and
budgetary savings. Develops and provides user training of classroom
technologies and media systems. Consults with faculty and administration
to determine optimum ways of incorporating technologies in instruction and
learning processes.
Coordinates classroom technologies and media systems with constituent
groups across the system including consulting with the West Plains and
Mountain Grove Campuses. Provides coordination and oversight for the
classroom technologies and media systems for new and renovated construction
including preparation of budgets for projects.
Represents the Libraries and Media Services in campus, regional and
state organizations. Participates in national associations. Develops and
teaches appropriate training and in-service courses for faculty, staff and
students and off-campus constituents.
Must meet faculty requirements for librarianship, professional development,
research, and service including teaching in the library science program and
participation in other appropriate library activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:Required: ALA accredited Master's degree or other
appropriate terminal degree. At least 5 years increasingly responsible
experience in supervising and administering media support services in an
academic situation. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as
well as the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the
university community and its constituencies. Strong leadership and
problem-solving abilities. Ability to analyze new trends and developments
in educational technology. Familiarity with uses, costs, and limitations of
current educational media technology.
Preferred: Experience with innovative media. Experience with planning
technology for new/remodeled facilities. Classroom teaching experience.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary negotiable. Rank & Salary dependent on
qualifications. 12 month appointment. 20 days vacation, holidays, 12 days

THE LIBRARY & CAMPUS: The SMSU Libraries contain over one and one-half
million items consisting of over 711,000 volumes; 874,000 documents; over
5,038 serials; 188,000 maps; and significant audio-visual, curriculum, and
microform collections. A staff of twenty-seven librarians and thirty-seven
support staff serve the needs of the university community. The Library uses
the Ameritech LMS (NOTIS) and a wide range of Internet, WEB and CD-ROM
products. The Libraries are planning a major addition and renovation which
will incorporate state-of-the-art technology with completion expected by
2001. Southwest Missouri State University is the second largest public
