THE BESSIE BOEHM MOORE AWARD

DESCRIPTION: The purpose of the award is to recognize and promote
excellence in library service to the aging population. This area of
librarianship is a special interest of Dr. Moore who served as Vice Chair
of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, as Chair
of the Arkansas State Library Commission, and who has been a member of the
American Library Association for more than sixty years. The award is
given to a public library in the United States that has developed an
outstanding and creative program for this clientele.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The library receiving the award should have a program
that is well planned and effectively directed, and there should be
evidence that it has made a difference in the community served. Criteria
for selection include:

   * library's effectiveness in meeting program goals
   * per cent of target population reached by the program
   * program's recognition of diversity among the aging population
   * library's coordination with state and local agencies serving the aged
   * inter-generational aspects of the program
   * effective use of existing resources
   * involvement of community in program
   * potential for adoption in other libraries

Program components may include outreach, collection development, staff
training, and/or other aspects of library service. A library
may receive the award more than once if there is a new program offered
