MASTERING WEB SEARCHING - A web-based course in which you can hone your Web
search skills and have fun too!
The CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM at the Faculty of Information Studies,
University of Toronto is offering MASTERING WEB SEARCHING, January 18 to
March 1, 1999
Mastering Web Searching is a seven-week course conducted entirely over the
Internet. Do this from work or home, and meet people through email who
have the same questions you do.
On completion of this course, you will:
* Be knowledgeable about the types of subject organized tools that can help
you in your research.
* Have developed skills in using basic syntax, boolean operators, and
special features at the major search engines: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot,
Infoseek, Northern Light.
* Know what resources to use to search for information in newsgroups and
mailing lists.
* Have chosen two or three preferred meta-searchers to help you with
big-sweep searches.
* Be acquainted with desktop metasearch software you can use.
* Be familiar with some speciality search engines.
* Be able to apply effective strategies for starting a search and
refining it.
The tours, exercises and assignments in this course along with direct
tutoring from the instructors, will give you the hands-on experience you
need to search the Net more effectively.

INSTRUCTORS
Gwen Harris and Sandra Wood are information consultants and Internet
specialists, co-authors of The Internet Guide, as well as instructors in
the Faculty of Information Studies Continuing Education program and the
School of Continuing Studies, University of Toronto.
HOW THE COURSE WORKS
This course is delivered entirely over the Internet. Outlines will be
delivered by e-mail every Monday. Class material about the topic, pointers
to important sites, and short assignments will be provided at the website.
There is a Web conferencing facility where students share experiences and
findings. There are also scheduled live-chat sessions (optional) where we
all get to really talk.
Note: Students tend to spend 5 to 8 hours a week on exploring the sites and
doing the exercises.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
* Computer with Internet connection and personal e-mail account
* Browser software: minimum - Netscape 3.0 or Internet Explorer 3.0
FEE: $240 Canadian ($180 US)
The fee includes a six-month subscription to The Internet Guide, the award
winning Web-based training and reference guide by instructors Gwen Harris
and Sandra Wood (value is $75 Canadian). (See demo at
