MUjgan San,

The DOI is simply a standard identifier with a fixed prefix and an item
specific suffix. It is based broadly on CNRI's Handle system, with various
associated metadata elements. It would certainly support indexing, just as
any metadata would. There are a number of papers about DOIs and other
identifiers at various locations on the Web, with a partial listing of
these at the DOI homepage, http://www.doi.org. Two recent papers have been
published by the JEP <http://www.press.umich.edu/jep/>. You could also ask
Norm Paskin, Director of the International DOI Foundation, for more
specific information, or ask questions of the DOI discussion group, which
can also be found via the DOI homepage.
