Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Director of
University Libraries. The position is a twelve month appointment, with
faculty status and tenure eligibility. The appointment will be effective
as soon as the successful candidate is available.
Responsibilities: Reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic
Affairs. Responsible for all aspects of the University Library
Administration and Management and the Biomedical Library.
Qualifications: Minimum educational qualification is an MLS (or equivalent)
from an ALA accredited institution. A second master's or a doctorate is
preferred. A minimum of five-years experience in academic library
administration is required. The candidate should possess demonstrated
knowledge of existing and emerging library technologies and demonstrated
experience in financial and staff management, creative problem-solving,
effective organizational communication and leadership.
The Libraries: Consist of the University Library and the Biomedical
Library. The University Library collections are housed on the main campus
with a 35,000 square-foot addition in the advanced stages of planning.
The University Archives and the USA Baldwin County branch library are on
satellite campuses. The Biomedical Library is located on the main campus
and at the USA Medical Center. The combined libraries have a professional
staff of 29 and a clerical staff of 48, collections of over 400,000
volumes and an annual budget of approximately $4.5 million. The USA
Libraries currently use the NOTIS automation system, but have begun to
review client/server-based systems with plans for conversion in the near
future. The Libraries are members of OCLC, SOLINET and Network of Alabama
Academic Libraries (NAAL). We invite interested candidates to visit the

The University: The University of South Alabama is a major comprehensive
public institution of the Gulf Coast. Celebrating its 35th year, the
institution has an enrollment in excess of 12,000 and consists of ten
colleges and schools, which include Allied Health, Arts and Sciences,
Business, Computer & Information Sciences, Continuing Education, Education,
Engineering, Medicine, Nursing and the Graduate School. Degrees are
offered at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels.
The City: The Mobile metropolitan area, located on attractive Mobile Bay,
has a population of 450,000. It is a well-established center of finance,
industry and international trade along the central Gulf Coast region.

Responsibilities: Handles sales of all OCLC products and services in
the OHIONET Territory. Travel to libraries, conferences, regional
meetings, and conduct presentations to individuals and groups.
Travel required (40%) in the geographic territory served by OHIONET.
(Currently Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia.)
Required: Minimum of three years relevant experience in the library
field. Experience in sales or sales-related activities involving
technology solutions, preferably library systems. Ability to work
with diverse staff in member libraries, work with limited

POSITION: Information Services Librarian
LOCATION: Hampden-Sydney College, Eggleston Library
Hampden-Sydney, Virginia
DESCRIPTION: Hampden-Sydney College, Eggleston Library,
seeks a unique individual for a one year position to assist in
developing
the college wide technology initiative. Eggleston Library has been a
campus leader in technological development. The library provides
online resources including: an OPAC, a variety of databases and
other
information accessible to students, faculty and staff from dorm
rooms,
offices and off campus. The library also supports, though its Fuqua
International Communications Center, multimedia applications and a
pilot distance learning initiative. A state of the art classroom and
a
bibliographic instruction room provide excellent facilities for
teaching,
training and workshops. An active TLTR is in place on campus.
Eggleston Library is now ready to begin a dialog with faculty on the
incorporation of technology into the teaching and learning
environment. We seek an individual who will work with the director
in
developing this initiative and with the librarians and library staff
at
implementing this initiative. Some additional basic library work,
including limited reference service and bibliographic instruction is
required.
REQUIREMENTS: Requires a MLS with significant library
experience, preferably at the Assistant or Associate Director's
level.
Previous experience with public services, in particular bibliographic
instruction and with online technologies essential. Effective
communication skills, successful management experience and ability to
provide leadership in the field of librarianship and technology is
necessary.
SALARY: This position is full time with benefits for one academic
year beginning on or before September 1, 1998. Salary commesurate
with experience.
