CATALOGING SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Old Dominion University Library invites applications and nominations
for the position of Cataloging Services Librarian. The Cataloging
Services Librarian will bring vision and energy to managing the
operations of the Cataloging Services Unit which is responsible for
both original and copy cataloging, and catalog maintenance of
materials in all formats including government publications.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Personnel management of one librarian, five
classified staff and student assistants. Establishes the goals,
standards, policies and procedures for effectively organizing and
providing intellectual access to the library=92s collections and
information resources. Manages the unit to produce timely and high
quality cataloging. Provides a challenging and supportive work
environment. Incumbent will participate in collection development
activities and in staffing public services desk.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Master=92s Degree in Library Science from an
ALA-accredited library School. Minimum of 3 years experience in a
cataloging setting including supervisory experience. Experience with
OCLC or another bibliographic utility; experience with AACR2R; USMARC
formats; LCSH; LC classification and with integrated library systems.
Excellent oral and written interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Demonstrated
planning, managerial and supervisory skills. Preferred: Experience
with government publications, awareness of new technologies, knowledge
of HTML, SGML, Innovative Interfaces, foreign languages.
LIBRARY: Old Dominion University, a publicly supported, urban,
research university with 600 faculty members and an enrollment of
17,400 students, is located in Norfolk, the center of Tidewater
Virginia. The Library has a staff of 26 librarians and 46 support
staff, with collections of 700,000 volumes and 6,500 current
subscriptions. A building expansion of 76,000 s.f. has just been
completed.

DESCRIPTION: The Office for Information Systems in the Harvard
University Library develops and supports large-scale systems for the
libraries at Harvard. This position provides analysis and support for
library staff on issues related to the use of bibliographic formats in
automated systems and is involved in developing and maintaining
processes, standards, and policies associated with cataloging in
automated systems. The successful candidate for this position will be
heavily involved in a project to migrate the Harvard integrated library
system from the mainframe to a distributed, client-server system over
the next several years.
Required:
Master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent training and
experience. At least 3-5 years of experience cataloging in an academic
or research library using an automated system. Solid understanding of
all MARC formats. Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated
analytic skills.
Desired: Experience cataloging a wide range of materials, experience
using HOLLIS.
This position is funded for five years, with the possibility of extension.

auxiliary, at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to begin
September 1, 1998. The successful applicant will have responsibility
for teaching, curriculum development, and research in one or a
combination of the following areas:
1. Knowledge Management
Includes topics such as business information resources, competitive
intelligence, information services in organizations, corporate intranet
design and administration, database management applications, records
management, and electronic archives.
2. Information Retrieval/Digital Libraries
Includes topics such as information retrieval from textual and
multimedia databases, content representation, cataloging and
classification, linguistics and natural language systems, and metadata.
3. Youth Services
Includes topics such as instructional technology and youth, resources for
children and young adults, information-seeking behaviors of children and
young adults, social, cultural, and professional issues.
The IST view of information is broad, multidisciplinary, and practical.
We offer an ALA-accredited MS in library and information science, a BS

PhD. We are executing a grant from the Kellogg Foundation that is
focused on reinventing education for information professionals. As a
result, our master's programs have undergone substantial redesign. With
Sloan Foundation grants we have established leadership in online
