Our library is going to purchase four new printers for our OPAC
workstations in the reference room. The librarians decided that we
wanted to purchase Okidata ML320T dot matrix printers for reasons of
cost and efficiency, but the computer department and administration are
not supportive of this, thinking that the technology is out of date. We
feel that these printers are reliable, inexpensive to purchase and
maintain, and well-suited for the job (i.e., printing OPAC records). We
feel that ink-jet or laser printers will cost more to purchase, waste
paper, and be more expensive to maintain in both materials and staff
maintenance time.
I would like to ask if anyone out there has or knows of any studies,
facts, or hard evidence that would support us in our argument. All
comments are welcome, but any research or evidence would be most
appreciated. Please respond directly to me.
Thank you.
