LIBRARY FACULTY POSITIONS
ZACH S. HENDERSON LIBRARY
GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
Applications are now being accepted for three faculty rank, tenure-track
positions in the Henderson Library of Georgia Southern University. The
library employs seventeen faculty and forty-four support staff.
Collections include over 500,000 volumes, over 600,000 government
documents, and almost 3500 current serial subscriptions. The library
utilizes the Data Research Associates (DRA) automation system, and has a
Novell-based local area network (IBM and Macintosh) with access to the
Georgia Statewide Library System, approximately 40 CD-ROM databases, over
50 licensed databases at other sites, and the full resources of the
Internet and the World Wide Web. There are almost 300 networked computers
available for public use in accessing curriculum support software and the
databases described above. The Library is open twenty-four hours a day
from noon on Sunday through midnight on Friday and 8:00 a.m. to midnight
on Saturday. The library maintains a home page at
http://www2.gasou.edu/library/.
Assistant Access Services Librarian (Assistant Professor):
Responsibilities include supervising all aspects of Interlibrary
Loan/Document Delivery services; serving as assistant head of the Access
Services Department (includes approximately 15 employees); supervising
the Library's shelving operation; and directly supervising two full-time
staff members, one part-time staff member, and approximately 20 student
assistants. An ALA-accredited master's degree, two years'
library-related experience, two years' supervisory experience,
demonstrated oral and written communication skills, a strong public
services commitment, strong technical skills, and strong organizational
skills are required. Knowledge of OCLC strongly preferred; circulation
experience preferred. Application letter MUST describe SPECIFICALLY the
applicant's qualifications for the position. Letter MUST address (in a
separate essay of two or three paragraphs) the use of electronic
resources in today's resource sharing environment.
Educational/Instructional Technologist (Assistant Professor):
Responsibilities include overseeing the public services programs of a
student computing facility within a library environment, with almost 300
networked microcomputers (IBM and Macintosh) with access to the Library's
extensive electronic resources; coordinating and supervising student
employees and services; promoting the use of electronic information
technology in the curriculum; and taking a lead in training students in
technology applications. Position requires a master's degree in
Instructional Technology or a comparable degree; minimum of one year
experience working in a microcomputer laboratory facility and
supervising student workers; ability to establish and maintain successful
working relationships with staff, customers, and the university
community; and demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Active
participation in at least one professional organization and experience as
a faculty member are preferred. Application letter MUST describe

Information Services Librarian (Assistant Professor) (Evening Hours):
Entry-level position with responsibilities for providing general
reference service; providing assistance with the library's microcomputer
applications network; assisting with computerized database searches;
providing user education for bibliographic and reference resources
(print and electronic) and microcomputer applications; preparing
reference and computer guides; and participating in reference collection
development, applications development, and related public service
activities. Hours for the position will be 3:00 p.m. to midnight Sunday
through Thursday. A master's degree, knowledge of and familiarity with
current microcomputer and networking technologies, knowledge of search
strategies for online databases and the Internet, and a strong public
services commitment are required. ALA-accredited master's degree

environment.
Finalists for all positions will be expected to make an oral presentation
during the on-site interview. Salaries dependent upon qualifications.
Minimum salaries in the upper 20s for the Assistant Access Services
Librarian and the Information Services Librarian and in the low 30s for
the Educational/Instructional Technologist. Excellent benefits package.

Coordinator of the Campus-Wide Information System
The Coordinator of the Campus-Wide Information System (CWIS) is
the librarian responsible for maintaining the structure, standards,
and content of the campus-wide information system, RPInfo. Leading the
RPInfo Support Committee, the Coordinator reports to the Head of
Library Automation within Libraries and Information Services, a unit
of Computing and Information Services (CIS), and works closely
with other Institute agencies, including other CIS units, News
and Communications, and other advisory groups, to oversee
information content, basic design, and development of RPInfo.
The CWIS Coordinator: Chairs the RPInfo Support Committee, which
provides information content and basic design guidelines for RPInfo.
Assists departments in participating in the campus-wide information
system, including demonstrating RPInfo, familiarizing information
providers with RPInfo standards, practices, and procedures,
and assisting them with finding and using appropriate software
tools. Provides online design consulting or referrals to consultants.
Incorporates new technologies and facilities into RPInfo to keep
it a leading-edge information service. Develops and conducts
training classes and demonstrations for RPInfo users and information
providers, as appropriate. Works with News and Communications and
other departments to create and maintain online collections of official
logos, seals, photos, templates, etc. Publishes and maintains general
Institute and regional information and general interest campus
information, working with departments and other information providers
(e.g. catalogs, admissions information, financial aid, etc.).
Actively keeps abreast of developments in the World Wide Web and
other relevant information sharing technologies. Designs and produces
related documentation for CIS units. Performs other duties as
assigned, including participation on various library and university
committees and task forces.
Specific and immediate responsibilities include working closely
with library staff, CIS units, News and Communications,
campus advisory groups, and other campus departments to establish
campus-wide information standards, procedures, and plans to develop
and provide high quality campus information services; establishing
standards for document preparation tools and formats; and working
with other CIS staff to make software generally available on
campus for licensed and freeware products and to coordinate software
changes and upgrades.
Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS. Demonstrated professional
writing skills (e.g. experience in journalism, editing, indexing
or information management with major responsibilities for
organization, format, and delivery of information). Working knowledge
of World Wide Web concepts, practices, procedures, protocols,
and implementations. Experience with HTML and other web
markup languages and utilities. Experience with UNIX and personal
document preparation programs such as word processors, desktop
publishing, imaging software, etc. Technical understanding of
computing and networking. Superior interpersonal skills, demonstrated
ability to teach and consult in a highly automated, networked environment.
Team-oriented, flexible, and able to work both independently and
collaboratively in a complex and changing environment.
Minimum salary: $30,000
