Title:  COORDINATOR FOR DIGITAL ACQUISITIONS (in the Harvard University
Library)

Salary Grade:   57 ($38,800-$61,900) or 58 ($43,700-$72,100) Depending upon
qualifications

DESCRIPTION:    Reporting to the Associate Director for Planning and Systems,
is responsible for coordinating cooperative purchases and consulting on
individual library purchases of network-accessible digital resources.
Specific duties include:

-- Investigates and coordinates evaluation of  commercial digital products

-- Communicates with vendors and other libraries on possible purchases

-- Works with various Harvard library groups and coordinates Harvard
decisions for complex purchases

-- Negotiates contracts

-- Coordinates implementation of new resources

-- Maintains a central repository of information on current and future
licenses, and monitors renewals

-- Communicates with faculty and library staff about possible purchases

-- Serves as a consultant to libraries on issues related to acquiring
digital resources

-- Monitors trends on electronic publishing and informs communities about
key developments.

REQUIREMENTS:   MLS or significant experience in research libraries.
Knowledge of Internet developments and electronic publishing.  Familiarity
with the technical issues involved in the network delivery of electronic
resources and with the legal and business issues involved in digital
acquisitions desirable.  Excellent communication and negotiating skills.

Head of Library User Services.  The Head of User Services provides
leadership for the major public service units of the University Libraries.
User Services at the Virginia Tech Libraries includes instructional and
media services, an innovative College Librarian program with library
faculty located in Virginia Tech's six Colleges, assistance desks for
library users, and circulation/stack maintenance services.  Staff includes
21 faculty and 35 classified positions.  We are looking for a division
leader who is excited about academic libraries and who understands that,
more than ever, library services and resources can make an important
difference in how the university community participates in learning,
teaching, and research.

The Head of Library Services participates in the Library Advisory Council,
and is expected to work as a team member in cross-unit initiatives.
Reports to the Dean of Libraries.

The position is a twelve-month faculty appointment; salary/rank
commensurate with experience and credentials.

Qualifications:  MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution; advanced
degree preferred.  Five or more years experience in academic library
services including instruction and reference; three or more years of
leadership and evaluation of staff and management of human resources.
Strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal abilities for working
with staff and collaborating with other university departments; good
technical skills including experience with development of web services;
management skills including creative abilities to maximize budget and
personnel allocations.  Knowledge of current trends in user services.
Finalists invited for interview must demonstrate communication skills and
knowledge of public services through a presentation to library faculty and
staff and other members of the university community.
