Technical Reference Librarian - New Jersey Institute of Technology

Reports to the University Librarian and works with and on empowered teams
in sharing assignments and duties.  Responsible for performing
professional reference desk duty, preparing and presenting library
orientations, instructing library users, conducting library and open house
tours, selecting and developing print and non-print material collection
and databases, performing literature searching and analysis,  interviewing
and responding to library users, promoting library services, meeting with
individual faculty, making faculty group technical presentations,
participating in academic department meetings, coordinating library
service delivery, monitoring professional trends and developments,
recommending new and improved services, and satisfying student, faculty,
and staff library needs.  Acts as liaison with designated academic
departments (May be changed as necessary).  Includes some evening and
occasional weekend work.

Minimum Criteria:
1.  Masters in Library or Information Science (ALA Accredited)
2.  Significant and excellent reference service experience.
3.  Knowledge and experience in one or more scientific and technical
disciplines taught at NJIT, [especially computer science and electrical
engineering].
4.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills
5.  Excellent interpersonal skills
6.  Public service oriented; maintains comfortable professional
relationship with library faculty, students, staff, colleagues, and
administrators.
7.  Excellent computer skills (DOS, Windows, Windows95), including word
processing (e.g. MS Word), spreadsheets (e.g. MS Excel) and databases
(e.g. MS Access).
8.  Excellent searching skills on integrated library system (e.g. all
modules-DRA), engineering and technology related databases (e.g. INSPEC
and CompendexWeb, Applied Science and Technology Index, Chemical
Abstracts, UnCover, UMI BPO, and other full text systems.
9.  Extensive Internet, and Web searching experience
10.  Keeps professionally current.

Preferred:
1.  Bachelor's and/or second Masters degree in appropriate technical
disciplines (such as [computer science or electrical engineering]
2.  Technical and scientific knowledge and experience in science and
technology library.
3.  Successful professional academic library experience.
4.  HTML and Web authoring skills and experience.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Percentages and duties are only illustrative and may change as needed.

30%   General Reference Services
Reference desk duty including literature searching and analysis, and
interviewing, assisting and responding to library users, promoting library
services.

25%  Liaison: Primary Contact Point to [the Computer Science and Electrical
Engineering Departments]
Meets and consults regularly with individual faculty, makes faculty group
technical presentations, participates in designated academic department
meetings, monitors professional developments, recommends new and improved
services, and satisfies student, faculty, and staff library needs.  Acts
as liaison to selected academic departments.

20% Selects and Develops Print and Non-Print Library Collections &
Resources.
        Consults and seeks recommendations regularly with individual
faculty and other users to determine their published document needs.
Selects documents for purchase in designated areas and recommends
purchases in other areas.

15% Participates Effectively on Library Teams
Recommends and performs new services, trains other staff, maintains area
of expertise professionally needed by teams, keeps abreast of library
trends, and otherwise participates as required by library team.

10%   Library Orientations, Instruction, Tours and Other Duties as
Required.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:  To schedule an examination

10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Examinations will be conducted at the County
of Los Angeles Public Library Headquarters, located at 7400 East
Imperial Highway, Room 223, Downey, California, 90242.  This
examination will remain open until the needs of the service are met.  The
next examinations are scheduled on January 9, February 13, March
13, and April 17, 1998.

Salary:  $2,715 - $3,362

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: A Master of
Library Science degree -or- completion of 36 graduate quarter units in a
library science curriculum leading to a Master of Library Science degree.

LICENSE:  A California Class "3" Driver's License may be required.

REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: Persons who are successful in this
examination but who do not have a Master of Library Science degree will
be withheld from the eligible list until this degree is obtained.

ELIGIBLE LIST INFORMATION: The names of candidates receiving a
passing grade on the examination will be added to the eligible list and,
unless appointed, will appear in the order of their score group for a
period of at least four (4) months following the date of eligibility.  No
person may compete in this examination more than once every four (4)
months.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

-Must be able to retrieve and place books and materials on high shelves
at maximum of 90" above the floor and place and retrieve items on floor
level shelves in order to weed shelves and locate collection materials.

-Must be able to use Automated Circulation System computer terminals
and other computer generated equipment; input data into a computer
terminal; and use telephone equipment.

-Extensive public and telephone contact requiring good communication
skills.  Employees must exhibit a positive and friendly service approach
when dealing with customers.

-Must be able to travel to locations throughout Los Angeles County to
attend meetings, training sessions, and conduct specific assignments.

-Must be able to operate audio-visual equipment, photocopy machines,
microfilm/microfiche reader printers and other equipment.

-Must be able to prepare various reports.

VACANCY INFORMATION: The resulting eligible list for this examination
will be used to fill permanent positions at facilities throughout the County
of Los Angeles.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION: This examination will consist of an
interview covering training, experience, personal fitness and general
ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.

Candidates claiming Veterans Credit must present a copy of their
honorable discharge or Certificate of Service (DD214) at the time of filing.
